Key West is where I settled when I first moved to the United States almost 40 years ago and is unlike anywhere else in the country. The island blends Caribbean, Bahamian, Cuban, and Southern influences, all surrounded by turquoise waters and lush tropical foliage. While I no longer live there, I visit frequently, and the island’s vibrant colors, quirky roosters, and conch architecture continue to be a source of inspiration for my art.
An iconic Key West conch cottage with colorful turquoise Bahama shutters—a hallmark of Key West and Caribbean architecture—designed to capture cooling breezes while providing shade from the tropical sun. I know I have walked or bicycled past this property on Elizabeth Street hundreds of times during my years in Key West. Acrylic on canvas set in a white floater frame. Framed size: 12" x 15".
This painting is of Andy’s Cabana, across from the Blue Heaven restaurant on Petronia Street in Bahama Village. The color gave me key lime pie vibes—something Blue Heaven is famous for—and it was painted from a photo I took while biking through the neighborhood. I loved painting the lush tropical foliage.
