This bright and colorful modernistic painting is guaranteed to get noticed. Reflecting its name, “Big, Bold and Beautiful,” the large fish at the center of the composition was painted using a combination of metallic and standard acrylic paints, then sealed with a high-gloss finish that makes it really pop against the richly layered ocean background. The interplay of textures and shimmering pigments adds depth and movement, drawing the eye across the canvas. Spell check: This painting of “Odette” from Swan Lake was influenced by my years as a dancer and by cherished memories of watching Rudolf Nureyev perform Swan Lake for my 16th birthday. My aim was to capture the shy, innocent beauty of the white swan as she gently hides behind her feathers. This work is the first in a series of two. Original acrylic on canvas, framed in a light wood-toned floater frame. Framed size approximately 20" x 26".
Odile, the Black Swan from Swan Lake. Second in the series, I aimed to capture the same ethereal beauty as Odette, but with the seductive, bewitching edge of the deceptive Black Swan. The color in the small eye is particularly intriguing and adds to the seductiveness I feel. Original acrylic on canvas, framed in a light wood floater frame. Framed dimensions: 20" x 26".
This highly detailed alligator portrait was painted using a reference photo from a neighbor S. Page Keeley. This one took a while to paint, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I loved his smile and eyes, and the way he sat among the delicate blue flowers of the weeds — one of our state’s iconic natives. This blue heron, painted from my own photograph, sits fishing by a lake near where I live and can almost always be found in the same spot. He stands so still and graceful, and that, combined with the lush green landscape indicative of SW Florida, gives me a wonderful sense of calm. An iconic Key West conch cottage with colorful turquoise Bahama shutters—a hallmark of Key West and Caribbean architecture—designed to capture cooling breezes while providing shade from the tropical sun. I know I have walked or bicycled past this property on Elizabeth Street hundreds of times during my years in Key West. Acrylic on canvas set in a white floater frame. Framed size: 12" x 15".
This painting is of Andy’s Cabana, across from the Blue Heaven restaurant on Petronia Street in Bahama Village. The color gave me key lime pie vibes—something Blue Heaven is famous for—and it was painted from a photo I took while biking through the neighborhood. I loved painting the lush tropical foliage. This Samurai Warrior was a commission piece. The juxtaposition of the imposing Samurai his Katana ready to be drawn against the cherry blossom trees, with a flurry of petals falling in the breeze creates a striking contrast between life and death and symbolizes the warriors code (Bushido). Not my usual subject but I learnt so much painting this. This Original 11’ x 14” Acrylic on Canvas now resides in the UK.
The bright turquoise doors and hot-pink blossoms create a striking contrast against the classic Greek white architecture. I loved painting the bougainvillea and can imagine myself sitting under its shady canopy with my morning coffee or evening cocktail. This is the third in a complementary series. This rustic wooden door set against the stone archway and cobblestone street screams Mediterranean. The door was my focal point in this painting and has interesting, deep, layered color tones up close. I loved how the shadows danced against the whitewashed walls, and can imagine the stone stairway behind leading up to the rooftop patio. Old stone whitewashed walls, Typical Greek blue doors and shuttered windows give off that old world charm of bygone mediterranean summers. The glow from the neighboring window hints at a life behind.
This photorealistic rooster, with vibrant orange hackles and saddle feathers, stands tall and proudly displays his tail. Set against a soft green background, he is part of a companion pair. I love painting roosters, and this one had such a proud stance that I named him "The King." The finished piece gives a French-country vibe and would fit nicely in a kitchen or dining room. This vividly colored rooster, with iridescent green breast and tail feathers and bright orange and red plumage, stands tall on a wooden post. His iridescent green feathers remind me of a finely tailored waistcoat; cocky and confident, he evokes a French prince from a bygone era. The breast and tail feathers are accented with metallic paints to give that iridescent shimmer. Part of a series of two, I used the same soft green background to keep them cohesive. Southern Elegance is a close-up botanical of the iconic Southern Magnolia, celebrating the bloom’s elegance, purity, and strength. It is set against a blue-gray, almost robin’s-egg background and is referenced from one of my own photos, taken at the botanical gardens in Bordeaux. This photorealistic painting of ripe summer strawberries in bloom is one of my favorites. Strawberry shortcake is after all Florida’s official desert although some of my friends in Key West would disagree. Acrylic on canvas in a white 1” gallery frame. Framed size 9.5” x 11.5”
This piece remains one of my favorites and was commissioned as a tender reminder of a lost loved one. Cardinals are widely regarded as spiritual messengers, and I hope its bright red color acts as a warm beacon, offering solace and gentle comfort. “Cardinals appear when loved ones are near.”
This funny and funky-looking rooster was such a joy to paint. I love painting roosters, and this one was no exception. I deliberately exaggerated his eyes for character while still retaining some photorealistic detailing. The bright red comb really pops against the teal background.
